A New Communication Hub for Every RISD Campus

If you have a student in Richardson ISD, your family’s main line to teachers, principals, and district offices is changing this school year. RISD has adopted ParentSquare as its district-wide mass communication platform for 2026–27, replacing the patchwork of apps and email threads that families have navigated for years. The rollout covers all campuses simultaneously, meaning whether your child attends an elementary school on the west side of the district or a high school near Campbell Road, the same tool handles everything from emergency alerts to lunch-menu updates.

The district flagged the switch on its main web portal at the start of the school year. Officials describe it as a significant upgrade — the kind that does not happen often and that touches every family in the district at once.

What ParentSquare Actually Does

ParentSquare is a cloud-based platform designed specifically for K-12 school districts. At its core, it consolidates messages that previously arrived through separate channels — robo-calls, district emails, campus newsletters, teacher apps — into a single feed. Parents and guardians receive notifications through whichever method they prefer: the mobile app, email, or SMS text. Replies route back to the school rather than disappearing into an unmonitored inbox.

For families with children at multiple campuses, that consolidation alone is a practical improvement. Instead of checking three different apps after a late-night weather alert, everything surfaces in one place.

The platform also supports two-way messaging between teachers and families, document sharing, event reminders, and language translation for non-English-speaking households — a meaningful feature in a district as linguistically diverse as RISD.

Why the Timing Matters

The launch lands at a moment when RISD families already have a packed fall calendar to track. The district’s approved 2026–27 calendar designates October 8–12 as Fall Break, giving families less than two weeks from today to get comfortable with the new system before the first extended absence scrambles the usual communication rhythm. Knowing how to check for any schedule updates or campus-specific messages before that break starts is worth a few minutes of setup time now.

Hispanic Heritage Month observances, running September 15 through October 15, are also underway across RISD campuses. Schools are incorporating cultural programming and classroom activities into the month, and ParentSquare is the likely channel through which individual campuses will share event details, volunteer opportunities, and student showcase information with families.

Getting Set Up Before a Message Matters

Check Your Invitation

RISD families should have received an enrollment invitation tied to the email address or phone number the district has on file. If that address is outdated — a common problem after a summer move or a changed cell number — the place to fix it is the campus registrar, not the app itself. The platform can only reach you through contact information the district already holds.

Download the App Early

ParentSquare is available for both iOS and Android. Setting up the app during a calm moment — not during a school-day emergency — lets you verify that notifications are arriving and adjust your preferences before anything time-sensitive lands.

Set Your Language Preference

Families who communicate primarily in a language other than English should configure their language setting during initial setup. ParentSquare translates outgoing messages automatically once that preference is saved, which means campus communications reach every household in a usable form rather than requiring a follow-up phone call.

Know Where to Get Help

For login issues or account questions, the first stop is your child’s campus office. RISD’s district website at web.risd.org also carries updated guidance as the rollout continues through the semester.

The Bigger Picture for Richardson Families

School communication systems rarely get attention until they fail — a delayed emergency alert, an event notice that reaches half the families, a teacher message that goes to a spam folder. RISD’s move to ParentSquare is an attempt to close those gaps before they become problems. For a district that serves tens of thousands of students across a large geographic footprint, standardizing on a single platform reduces the chance that any one campus or family falls through the cracks.

The practical ask for families right now is straightforward: confirm your invitation arrived, download the app, and check that your contact information is current. Ten minutes of setup at the start of the year is considerably easier than sorting out a missed message in the middle of one.

Never miss a bite.
